An Outline of the Technique

During an autopsy every organ of every body system is examined visually and, if needed, microscopically. When needed for further studies, blood, urine, bile and cerebrospinal fluid samples are taken and analyzed. All pathological sites are photographed.

The autopsy itself lasts approximately 3 to 6 hours. Usually 12 to 15 additional hours are needed to complete the microscopic and the research aspect of the autopsy.

A final report is issued to the next of kin or another authorized person with in four weeks.

The pathologist who performed the autopsy is likewise available for testimony, should it be required.
